Shopee Achieved 260 Million Transactions in Three Months
People are turning to online shopping to minimize the risk of contracting the coronavirus. In line with this trend, e-commerce company Shopee recorded 260 million transactions in the second quarter or during the corona pandemic.
Transactions on the platform during April-June jumped 130% on an annual basis (year on year/yoy). Average transactions per day reached 2.8 million.
“We have seen many changes in people’s behavior, leading to the growth of digital transactions. Consumers are meeting their needs during the pandemic through e-commerce,” said Shopee Indonesia Director Handhika Jahja during a virtual press conference, Tuesday (1/9).
He considered that the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of e-commerce by the public. “From not being used to it, the adoption of e-commerce applications (due to the pandemic) has accelerated,” he said.
Handhika assessed that this online transaction habit will continue even though the pandemic is over. “We see this is permanent. People’s habits change because they experience the ease of shopping online,” he said.
This is in line with research by Facebook and Bain & Company, which estimates that the gross transaction value (GMV) on online platforms in Indonesia will reach US$ 26 billion or around IDR 378.3 trillion this year.
The value is predicted to increase to US$ 72 billion or IDR 1,047.6 trillion in 2025. This figure is soaring compared to the initial projection of only US$ 48 billion in 2025.
Shopee Has the Largest Number of Visitors in Indonesia
The number of digital service consumers in the country is predicted to increase from 119 million in 2019 to 137 million this year. In Southeast Asia, the number is projected to touch 310 million, five years earlier than the initial projection. This means that nearly 70% of consumers in Southeast Asia will switch to digital by the end of the year.
Along with this increase, the number of visits to the Shopee platform also reached 93.44 million per month in the second quarter, based on iPrice’s research. Shopee ranks first with the highest number of visits in Indonesia.
Shopee beat Tokopedia, which has 86.103 million visits to its platform per month. The third position is occupied by Bukalapak 35.3 million. Then, Lazada 22 million, Blibli 18 million, and JD.id 9.3 million. Handhika said that companies rely on promotions or discounts to attract consumers.
It focuses on innovation in terms of products and supporting infrastructure. Shopee also held a Super Shopping Day 9.9 discount party from August to September. The company also provides free extra shipping, late-night sales of up to IDR 99, and shares coins at Shopee Tanam.
The Shopee 9.9 Super Shopping Day campaign program will reach its peak period on September 9, 2020. The campaign was created to stimulate people’s purchasing power during a period of economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Super Shopping Day will Last for 23 Days
The 9.9 Super Shopping Day Campaign lasts for 23 days starting from 18 August until its peak on 9 September 2020. There are various shopping promos offered by Shopee in this program that consumers can enjoy.
Shopee Indonesia Director Handhika Jahja said the 9.9 Campaign was the biggest campaign that Shopee created every year. This year, the program was rolled out to help the economy recover from both the consumer and the seller side.
“This Super 9.9 Shopping day is the biggest campaign that Shopee makes every year for 23 consecutive days, to provide convenience and increase people’s purchasing power in this difficult time,” Handhika said in the Shopee 9.9 Super Shopping Day Media Gathering event through Zoom Webinar, Tuesday (9/1/2020).
Handhika detailed, a series of offers were given by Shopee in the campaign, including free shipping without minimum shopping. Furthermore, on September 9 there will be a late-night sale with product price offers starting at IDR 99. Shopee also distributed prizes in the form of Shopee Coins through the Shopee Plant game up to 9.9 million.
